Environmental Health & Safety Specialist
within the Department of Public Safety.

Job Description
Objective
The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist will work as part of the Health & Safety team and conduct daily operations, special projects, and annual initiatives.
Incumbent is expected to regularly exercise discretion utilizing advanced technical knowledge and skills and act as a subject matter expert in this field.
Essential Functions
● Assist with environmental health and safety program general operations administrative duties
● Develop environmental health and safety program education materials
● Assist with chemical and biological material inventory and related Safety Data Sheet (SDS) online library management
● Assist with hazardous waste management including inventory audits, compatibility determinations, consolidations, profiling, and transfers for disposal.
● Assist with fume hood ASHRAE 110 inspection and testing
● Assist with biosafety cabinet (BSC) and laminar flow hood recertifications
Emergency Management:
● Assist with emergency management program general operations and administrative duties
● Develop emergency management program education materials
● Participate in emergency management program outreach events
● Participate in tabletop and/or live exercises when possible, based on scheduling
Special Projects:
● Assist with development of the Saint George’s environmental health and safety web pages
● Conduct campus-wide biennial chemical inventory
● Assist with COVID-19 public health crisis incident management
● Assist with the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Project in collaboration with Grenada’s National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA)
● Assist in the university’s emergency management accreditation
● Configure emergency management / emergency operations center (EOC) software
Essential Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
●Strong oral and written communication skills
●Capable of working well both independently and in a team setting
●Detail-oriented, organized, and professional
●Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office is required and experience with Arc GIS software is preferred
●Capable of wearing personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection
Work Environment/Physical Demands
● Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
● Capable of wearing personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection
● Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
● The position is an office position operating in a professional environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, scanners and filing cabinets.
Hours and Travel
●A typical work week is 40 hours Monday to Friday with flexible start, lunch break and end day.
●Weekend work will be as is required.
●No travel anticipated for this position.
Qualifications
●At least 1 year experience in working with health, safety, and environmental programs and practices
● At least 1 year experience in a laboratory setting, including knowledge of prudent laboratory practices
● Bsc in Public Health & Safety or related discipline
● Professional certification in one or more EHS specialties (CIH, CHMM, CSP, CBSP, CHP, etc.) will be an asset.
