SVM - Associate Professor, Small Animal Medicine and Surgery



St. George’s University invites applicants for a full-time Associate Professor role, in the Small Animal Medicine and Surgery department in the School of Veterinary Medicine, beginning 8/1/2025.





Job Description



Objective



The faculty of St George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine are dedicated to upholding the mission of providing an international, culturally diverse environment in which students learn the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for postgraduate training in the Veterinary profession while being inspired to develop compassion, curiosity, tolerance and a commitment to animals and society, a dedication to life-long learning and an understanding of the vital role of research in Veterinary Medicine.



Essential Functions



Enhance the knowledge, growth, and overall development of the veterinary students through contribution to courses administered by the Department through the delivery of assigned lectures, running small groups, reviewing, and contributing to course material, developing, and reviewing exam questions.



Support the primary care/emergency clinicians of the Small Animal Clinic via case consultations, providing continuing education support, and mentorship.

Contribution to research is also required, which can include educational research.



Roles and Responsibilities



This position will include participation in different courses across the curriculum.

Instruction, scholarship and clinical service are expected.



The expected FTE for the position is as follows:





+ Instruction (70%)



+ Clinical Service (20%)



+ Course/Committee Administrative Service(5%)



+ Scholarship (5%)





Small Animal Medicine Instruction 70%





+ Design and deliver lessons in small animal medicine in the DVM graduate program.

This includes didactic and active learning lectures, interactive lessons, small group sessions, and guided self-study.





+ Contribute to new curriculum design in small animal medicine topics, with a focus on years 2 and 3.



+ Course administration/directorship.



+ Grading of student performance.



+ Assist in conducting and grading of examinations in compliance with the SVM Examination Policy.



+ Participate in teaching professional skills, including leading small group discussions, communication coaching with simulated clients, and similar student-led learning activities in all 3 pre-clinical years of the DVM curriculum.





Clinical Service 20%





+ Provide clinical service in the Small Animal Clinic (SAC) by assisting clinical faculty, attending rounds, providing internal medicine consultations (doctor-to-doctor), providing internal medicine diagnostics when needed, and providing continuing education on a continual basis.



+ Assist in technician education/training



+ Contribute to other SAC activities (i.e. M&M rounds, case presentations, Continuing Education).





Research and Scholarly Activities 5%:





+ Active engagement in a research program in the area of expertise which will also provide student research opportunities.



+ Assist in new and/or ongoing research endeavors.



+ Develop and contribute to extension and continuing education programs, in collaboration with other departments and/or other schools.





+ Support student research and learning through supervision and mentoring of selected students.



+ Contribute to curriculum review and innovation.



+ Practice continuous quality improvement of the courses and content delivered by the department.



+ Active participation in scientific/educational conferences and Continued Education.





Course/Committee Administrative Service 5%



Participate in the following University activities:





+ Departmental Reviews (as required)



+ SAMS and SVM Faculty Meetings (as required)



+ Special Committee Assignments (as assigned by the Dean)



+ Administrative roles, as assigned by the Chair of the Department and/or the Dean



+ Outreach efforts in the local community (i.e. OHOM)



+ Faculty Senate



+ Contribute to the academic advisory system for all students enrolled on the DVM program.



+ Any other activities requested by the Dean, and/or the Department Chair









Qualifications





+ DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree, MSc preferable.



+ Board certification.

Board eligibility will be considered based on successful completion of a Residency training program by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) or the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ECVIM).



+ Other recognized Board certifications and experienced in a clinical teaching facility will be considered as well.





Desirable Qualities





+ Experience teaching and designing coursework in Small Animal Medicine in a Veterinary Medicine curriculum, teaching certification, or similar



+ Excellent oral and written communication skills



+ A commitment to the education of DVM professionals
